Giants of the Frost Kim Wilkins Books

First half of this book was enjoyable. Unfortunately, the story really stared to drag and feel predictable near the midway point. I did skim through to the end and that was average. This author came highly recommended to me, so I may try her work again at a later date.

Giants of the Frost Kim Wilkins Books Reviews

I have had this book to read for quite some time. I first read Kim Wilkins in the Dreaming Again anthology released in 2008. I immediately went out and picked out Giants of the Frost and The Autumn Castle. I thought the Autumn Castle was okay, but not great. Giants of the Frost was also in the “okay but not great” category. It moves pretty slowly. It’s advertised as an urban fantasy but really doesn’t fit in that genre all that well.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was okay. Some of the characters voices were really well done and some were very annoying. For example the character of Aud had a very scratchy annoying voice. However, the main character’s voice was incredibly well done and nice to listen to. So I guess there was some good and some bad here.

Victoria Scott is trying to recover from breaking off her engagement and just wants somewhere quiet to finish her thesis. She takes a job on an isolated island in the Sea of Norway with a small group of weather researchers. Vicki is a logical woman and isn’t prepared for the stick like man who haunts her doorstep or the terrifying Hag that tries to suck the life out of her. Unknown to Vicki she has a history with this island, a history from a past life.

Meanwhile in Aesir lands Vidar is waiting for his true love on Midgar to be reborn. Until that time he is living away from the rest of his family (Odin, Loki, etc.) in a simple farmhouse with the slave Aud. Odin wants to keep Vidar close because of the prophecy that Vidar will one day save his life. However, Vidar is determined to be reunited with this true love once she is reborn.

I enjoyed the Norse mythology here and the beautiful writing style. I love the setting of the lonely Norse island in the sea; it’s very atmospheric and Wilkins makes it easy to picture. However, this story is very slow. Not a lot happens given how long the book is; midway through the book I was just plain bored.

I really enjoyed the characters on the research island in Midgard; Vicki and her coworkers were doing interesting work and were interesting to read about. However, I thought the portions of the book that took place in Asgard were boring and childish. I really disliked the character of Aud who made numerous poor decisions and then ended up being one of the only characters to get a happy ending. I cannot begin to go into the depths of my dislike for Aud and her childish and selfish decisions.

Overall this was an okay read. There were parts of the book I really liked (the mythology, Vicki’s character, writing style) and parts that I absolutely hated (how slow the middle of the book was, Aud’s character, the scenes in Asgard). It was just a very uneven read for me. I think from now on I will stick to Wilkins short stories and skip her books; I seem to enjoy her short stories a lot better than any of the books she’s written.
Though I havnt started reading yet I am confident giving a positive review as once I pick up a Kim Wilkins novel, I literally cannot put it down. The book is gorgeous with clear print and a nice size for a long novel. I am excited by the story description.
A wonderful tale that flips between worlds. The author was well versed in Norse mythology!
This was a "nice" book. I love her early works and read "Grimoire" in two days. New books are "OK" and worht reading , but lack the pizzazz.
This book an effort to plow through in parts but I was glad when I finished. The author wraps up all the loose ends nicely and although I didn't care much about the love story, I did enjoy the way she weaved Nordic Gods into a story about this woman in modern times.
I looked forward to reading this, and it did not disappoint. This well-constructed novel kept my interest throughout. Enjoyed Loki's character especially, also a fearsome, drunken Odin. The love story between the main characters was better than some, but in my opinion, it should have been better.
Once I started the first page of this haunting romantic fantasy, I couldn't put it down until the very last page. Kim Wilkins has brought to life the worlds of Midgard and Asgard. Midgard is the world as we know it whereas Asgard is where Nordic gods such as Odin reside. In Midgard, Victoria Scott has escaped from her two failed engagements and her psychic-consulting mother to Othinsey, an isolated island in the Sea of Norway, to continue her work in meteorology research. Othinsey is the stepping stone between the two worlds and, as such, several inhabitants from Asgard have been exiled there by Odin. Those at the meteorological station have rumored that Othinsey is haunted due to whispers heard during the night as well as sightings of a hag who'll steal your breath, the draugr, and a wight (a twig man). Victoria is a skeptic until she too sees both the hag and the wight Skripi, but due to her chronic insomnia, she tries to excuse the sightings as hallucinations. Unfortunately, events have been set in motion that leave Victoria alone on Othinsey. Meanwhile in Asgard, Vidar, Odin's son, becomes aware of Victoria and decides to see her again. Victoria is the reincarnation of his love, Halla, who was killed by Odin. Odin feared that Vidar would leave Asgard as Vidar is prophesied to save Odin from the end of the world, known as Ragnarok. Vidar, in his grief over Halla, had gone to see Hel in Niflheim who granted the reincarnation of Halla but allowed that it would be many, many years before her return. In addition, Vidar cannot reveal her past until Victoria has fallen in love with him again. I will not spoil this wonderful mythology based romantic fantasy by revealing more of the plot as it is the intricately interwoven details that make this such a masterpiece. Suffice to say that Loki makes an appearance and with Loki there is always mischief. Overall, this hauntingly beautiful tale is well worth reading.
