Blue Galaxy eBook Diane Dooley

"Blue Galaxy" by Diane Dooley is a very enjoyable read. Even though it was short, it didn't feel short. I found that I liked that about the story. The story was fast-paced with no overdevelopment of characters and no unnecessary descriptions in the world building. In fact, there was just the right amount of character development and world building.

The science fiction element to the story is interesting and believable. I loved the sling shot method of traveling and the story behind the testing of that. I liked the air blast method of taking showers; it definitely makes sense that water would be costly. There were a lot of very good ideas like those that tickled my sci-fi fancy just right.

Then there's the romance side, which was very fun and definitely satisfying. You get to know Javan right off the bat. Sola is more of a mystery, and I don't want to give anything away, but she surprised me in the middle to the end of the book. What she did is certainly questionable but, for whatever reason, I couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear. Each one of them has a very good balance of strengths and vulnerabilities and I loved how they manipulated each other throughout the story. Again, it was very fun!

I would love to read more stories in this universe. I'm particularly interested in Destin Grady. There seemed to be more to him than what Javan thought of him. I've read the story twice now and my mind keeps wandering to what Destin's story might be...

I will definitely be reading more of Diane Dooley's work and recommend "Blue Galaxy" to anyone who loves a good romance with the bonus of it being set in science fiction.

Blue Galaxy eBook Diane Dooley Reviews

So I read Mako's Bounty a little while ago and really liked it. Then I remembered that I had another little SFR treat by Diane Dooley tucked away on my iPad.

Diane Dooley's Blue Galaxy is a short, romantic and sexy science fiction romance. It's a story where you think you know the characters; the hard-bitten, hard-drinking ship captain on his last voyage and his last credit, and the naive upper-class young woman who will redeem his honor, while he saves her from life as some older warlord's chattel bride.

If that were the story, as long as it ended in an HEA, if the characters were written well and the adventures were fun, (and the sex was smokin' hot) it could make for a damn fine story.

Captain Javan Rhodes is pretty much as described. Han Solo without Chewie, if Leia had told him to take a hike. Only way further down on his luck and he never loved her anyway. He's a war hero that slid really far down the seamier side of the space lanes.

However (ahem), Sola is much, much more than the innocent blue-blood Javan thinks she is. Is he rescuing her, or is she rescuing him? And exactly how much of the galaxy is chasing after them?

Escape Rating B+ This was just plain fun. I loved the twist at the end. I just wish I knew more about the world. And I wish there were more story. Are there any more Javans out there?

Space Captain Javan Rhodes takes a "don't ask, don't tell" mission for a sizable payload. The mission? Transport a human passenger to an unknown destination on the outer rim of the colonies. The passenger, Sola, a beautiful young aristocrat turns out to be more than he's bargained for. In the days and months it takes for their journey, Javen finds himself sinking further and farther into Sola's crazy plans.

BLUE GALAXY was both a hit and miss for me. I almost gave up within the first 2 pages. We meet Captain Rhodes as he's prepping his ship for this new mission. The next page, he meets Sola. And he falls in love. No really. He falls madly in love the moment she lifts the hood of her robe two pages into the story.

"She Smiled." And Captain Javan Rhodes, gazing on what had to be the most exquisite face in the entire universe, felt his heart twist as he fell instantly, irrevocably and most definitely in love" (page 9.)

I almost stopped there. But I told myself to push through and it'd get better. It did. The story develops and twists into a really engaging story. Everything is told from Javen's POV. Javen has a very interesting past that has formed him into a smuggling space captain trying to avoid all the aristocrats and the Dictator of Earth. Unfortunately, Sola, being an aristocrat (with plans of her own) drags Javen right into the mist of things.

Although it was a rocky start for me, I became more and more engrossed in the story trying to figure Sola out. She's crafty, inventive, assertive, and daring. We get glimpses as to who she truly is as the story progresses.

The parts that were a miss for me were the irrevocably falling in love on page 9, as well as parts of the ending. I don't want to give anything away, but there just wasn't any fun to watching any of the "battles" and "fights" because of certain unnamed aspects Sola kept hidden The fights just didn't even happen. Where's the fun in that? I never got the sense that I should actually *fear* this person because everything just died before there was any action...there was no build up. Also, the story just kinda abruptly ended. Is this it? Is this a series? Do we get to find out what happens next in Sola's plans? Because Javen just finally uncovered the truth of everything and how he fits into it. It seemed like only ½ of the story got finished.

So I'm looking. I'm looking to see if there is more, because I was thrown into this space adventure and didn't get all the answers. Granted, it was short and packed a punch for being so short, but I want to know what happens next.

Be warned, when I say short, I mean short. Only 64 pages. Is that worth $2.39 to you?

64 Pages

**UPDATE 9/24/12
It looks like this *IS* a series
BLUE GALAXY
Blue Nebula
Too much of the story was illogical and the characters, though intended to be complex, were superficially drawn by trying too hard to pack too much into too little. Because it was short, I did read to the end, but have deleted and won't buy more from this author.
